Matthew Lane Sanderson

Matthew Lane SandersonMatt is an experienced metalwork artist and has led a series of artistic commissions for the new Pegasus.

Magdalen’s Tree
Matt won the commission at Pegasus to develop a sculpture for the foyer of the new building to mirror the cladding to the front. Since winning the commission Matt has engaged with staff, youth members and our local community to develop his artistic ideas. The tree’s enormous size raised unprecedented challenges for engineering and visual styling, and Matt worked closely with the project team to overcome these obstacles. He spent 12 months planning and designing the tree as the centrepiece of the new building. The 6m x 3.5m forged sculpture contains over 4,500m of steel and is adorned with hundreds of glass roundels inscribed with text sentiments contributed by our funders and donors.

Magdalen's TreeWire drawings
In October and November 2009 Pegasus hosted a series of workshops for the local community. Matt inspired over 160 participants of all ages to create their own piece of wire drawing art. Matt and Aurelian have adorned the walls and stairwells of the new building with these pieces as a rotating exhibition of public art.

Alex Beatty's winning designCycle parking
In January 2010 we challenged Oxfordshire’s 6-19 year olds to let their imaginations run wild and send us their ideas for our Rack Your Brain cycle parking competition. We received over 120 entries from across the county and our judging panel chose Alex Beatty’s electric blue rollercoaster as the winning entry. Matt and Alex developed the idea into the finished piece of work that stands outside the front of the theatre. The results combines a unique amalgamation of both function and form; industrial and organic, and is clad in over 300 bicycle chains to create a textured finish that reflects the sculptures intended use.
